Through immersion into the screen and opening-up of the barriers between film and audience, films are given a quite new, communal life. A film is viewed, it is discussed, the cinema is a place to get together. On a city’s cultural horizon film and audience merge – at the upcoming Rijeka Film Forum.
The first Rijeka Film Forum, organised by Art-kino as part of Rijeka 2020 – European Capital of Culture's flagship named Times of Power, will be held from 28 August to 2 September at Art-kino.
Same as Rijeka 2020 – Port of Diversity, all RIFF films are treated equally: no distinction shall be made on the basis of film format or genre because FILM is FILM, and titles that are screened at the forum are exclusively required to be original, fresh, dynamic, innovative, recent and, certainly, radical.
RIFF is not concerned with the film's origin – it is open to the whole world. The only condition is that it elicits a desire for discussion and questioning, because Art-kino is not only a place for screening and watching films, but also a place for discussion, education, communication, and researching the art of motion picture, film reflection and reflection on film.
Thus, the film programme of Rijeka Film Forum brings a total of thirteen feature and documentary films from all over the world, which will have its Croatian premiere for the most part in Art-kino. Guided by the previously mentioned principles, RIFF's selection seeks to create a strong foundation for joint discussion and questioning, therefore the forum nature of the new film event in Rijeka will be complemented with relevant conversations and encounters, in and around the cinema.
In this way, RIFF will offer to the Times of Power flagship – inspired and dedicated to questioning different forms and relations of power, a film form and content in which the Rijeka audience has not yet had the opportunity to engage.
The entire RIFF programme is held around the cinema, a safe and well-known base for organisers and visitors, a unique meeting place for film and words, which in its basic meaning a film forum implies.
With a departure from the competitive character and numerous (planned in the original festival edition) accompanying content, Rijeka Film Forum emphasizes solidarity, openness and collaboration, together with the question that is essentially the most important - what can films offer to its viewers?
And what about the audience? The audience is the face of Rijeka Film Forum, and its most important protagonist. With viewers who come first, Art-kino embarks on a new and exciting adventure in Rijeka, a new port of film encounters.
RIFF brings a sea of films, and cinema is more than film.
Art-kino Croatia
Art-kino is a public institution founded by the City of Rijeka active in the domain of film art and culture. The main programme activities take place at Art-kino Croatia, a cinema located in the city centre at Krešimirova 2, and in two additional spaces in close proximity – Mini Art-kino and Art-kino LAB.
Art-kino operates as a platform for development of audiovisual activities in Rijeka, and it has attained a role of the main promoter of film culture. This year, Art-kino has undertaken a new role: the one of being the organiser of RIFF – the first Rijeka Film Forum. Over the years, Art-kino has established itself as a pleasant and atmospheric place with a profiled programme. The proof are numerous film premieres that take place in Rijeka, guest appearances by film artists, critics and theorists, but most importantly – the big and regular audience. Art-kino combines screening, distributive and educational functions, and it also provides other public services required to fully develop film activities in Rijeka. It is not only a place for screening and watching films, but also a place for discussion, education, communication, and researching the art of motion picture, film reflection and reflection on film. Art-kino is dedicated to developing new generations of audience as well as new programmes and practices for presentation and interpretation of film. As such, it is a perfect place for Rijeka Film Forum.
Summer Art-kino
Summer Art-kino is located in the courtyard of the Capuchin Monastery of Our Lady of Lourdes (the entrance is through the cinema). But, no worries: In case of bad weather, films will be screened at Art-kino venue. Because film comes first!
A unique experience of watching films under the starry sky, a break from long and warm summer days is well known to everyone who walked straight through the Art-kino corridor and climbed the stairs to the courtyard of the Capuchin Monastery, where Summer Art-kino is being held for the 8th year in a row. The hidden film oasis is located in the city centre, but the fact that we are near the city bustle can be sensed only by the imposing side of the Capuchin Church overhanging the summer cinema, flying seagulls and rare evening trains passing by. All in all, it does not bother the visitors, but it spontaneously reminds them – from time to time – to enjoy even more this somewhat romantic oasis of film in the heart of Rijeka.
And that only the (film) sky is the limit at Summer Art-kino is evidenced by countless programmes that have been held there in recent years – from premieres and festival openings, screenings of film classics and best recent titles, to the last summer’s Film Club 54+ closing ceremony.
